I’ve been volunteering this summer at Food Gatherers’ Community Kitchen. Just chopping vegetables, making salads, that kind of thing. It’s been interesting, though I’d like to be more involved in organizing how the rescued ingredients are to be assembled together. There are a lot of freedom with salad-making, but more would be good also. Anyway, I like what I do there.
I like to eat. As my time in New Haven winds down, I thought I would make a conversion chart for people who like to eat, have lived in either Ann Arbor or New Haven, and are going to the other “city”. After a recent experience, I feel a strong need to echo opinions expressed on yelp.com on Cafe Felix: Really awful service, mediocre food, very overpriced. If you are interested in a faux-Parisian experience with martinis that are not really martinis, go there. If you are not interested in being treated terribly by the owner and a waiter named Derek D., then do not go there. That’s basically it.
About a week ago, Ann Arbor had its annual art fair. (Blogging about the past will be commonplace as I recount summer happenings.) Well, there are actually 4 different art fairs. Basically, the town is turned into a big outdoors gallery, with some festival atmosphere. I can see how drivers would find the closing of the streets extremely annoying, but I think I had a good time overall. Not surprisingly, everything was rather expensive. But I did go to a free demonstration of silkscreening where I made shirts that said ‘Go Grue’. Very dorky of me, but fun.
Since I can hardly afford their works, I thought I would link to some artists whose work I liked and whose business cards I remembered to ask for:
- Gabe Lanza: cartoon-inspired multimedia.
- Chris Honeysett: photography.
- Maria Gruber: photography.
- Maria Napoli: color-field oil paintings.
