This idea is entirely due to Dave Wiens, who has kindly allowed me to post it here. All royalties, however, should continue to be directed to him.
People have talked about using blog systems like WordPress as content management systems (CMS). In this case, why not let the content be notes about various articles? As one reads an article, one could jot down important quotes and comments or questions. As Dave points out, it will be fully searchable, and easily categorizable. I think it is also a huge plus that it is on the internet, so easily accessed from anywhere. For me, in addition, forcing myself to write down a blog post and think in complete sentences is really helpful.
I am sure many philosophers already have lots of files on their computers of different notes. At least on Macs, Spotlight allows searching within the content of files. However, a note blog seems better for the aforementioned reasons. Given that I am currently working on my pre-candidacy research, I think I will adopt this system and see how it works.
