I meant to post about this a while ago, but I forgot. So in case there are others, like me, who are interested in what Taiwanese analytic philosophers are working on these days, the program for the 2007 Taiwan Philosophical Association is available. While the primary language of the conference, unsurprisingly, is Chinese, there are also a few English papers up there.

I have not had a chance to read the papers very carefully, but a quick glance seems to indicate that Taiwanese analytic philosophers are interested in much of the same stuff as contemporary philosophers who are working in anglophone countries. More cross-cultural engagement is probably good for everyone. So if you have time, check these papers out!

This idea is entirely due to Dave Wiens, who has kindly allowed me to post it here. All royalties, however, should continue to be directed to him.

People have talked about using blog systems like WordPress as content management systems (CMS). In this case, why not let the content be notes about various articles? As one reads an article, one could jot down important quotes and comments or questions. As Dave points out, it will be fully searchable, and easily categorizable. I think it is also a huge plus that it is on the internet, so easily accessed from anywhere. For me, in addition, forcing myself to write down a blog post and think in complete sentences is really helpful.

I am sure many philosophers already have lots of files on their computers of different notes. At least on Macs, Spotlight allows searching within the content of files. However, a note blog seems better for the aforementioned reasons. Given that I am currently working on my pre-candidacy research, I think I will adopt this system and see how it works.

News here.

The 118-year-old cylinder that is the international prototype for the metric mass, kept tightly under lock and key outside Paris, is mysteriously losing weight.

“It’s not clear whether the original has become lighter, or the national prototypes have become heavier,” said Michael Borys, a senior researcher with Germany’s national measures institute in Braunschweig. “But by definition, only the original represents exactly a kilogram.”

Yes, but what would a philosopher say?

“Martin Klimas destroys a lot of clay to make his art. Combining the silence of Eadweard Muybridge’s horse pictures with the association-rich composition of a still life, Klimas breaks recognizable objects so they become something else, and stops us just at the moment of transformation.”

I provide a way for us to see this action differently. It is an in-between state. A state where rest and motion can exist together. I hope this situation can be applied and give us thought in our everyday world.
